HEATSTROKE IN DOGS/CATS

WHAT THIS SYMPTOM USUALLY MEANS

Heatstroke occurs when the body overheats beyond its ability to cool. It causes organ damage, brain swelling, clotting failure, and is life-threatening within minutes. Dogs are more susceptible than cats — especially brachycephalic breeds.

MOST COMMON CAUSES

MILD OR SELF-LIMITING CAUSES (COMMON)

Heatstroke has no mild form — all cases are serious.

MEDICAL CAUSES THAT NEED DIAGNOSIS (MODERATE CONCERN)

• Overexercise in hot/humid weather
• Heat retention in obese pets
• Limited access to shade/water
• Early airway disease

EMERGENCY CAUSES (HIGH CONCERN)

• Being left in a car
• Brachycephalic airway collapse
• Intense exercise on hot days
• Seizures outdoors
• Hot pavement burns causing collapse
• Heat exposure leading to organ shutdown

RED FLAGS: WHEN THIS IS AN EMERGENCY

• Collapse or wobbliness
• Vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
• Bright red or pale gums
• Excessive thick drooling
• Very high temperature (>104–105°F)
• Rapid worsening of breathing

If you’re unsure, treat it as urgent.

AT-HOME CARE YOU CAN START NOW

• Move pet to cool, shaded or air-conditioned area
• Begin cool (not ice-cold) water on belly, groin, armpits
• Offer small amounts of cool water
• Use a fan
• Transport immediately — cooling must continue
These steps do not replace a veterinary exam if symptoms continue or worsen.

WHAT A VETERINARIAN WILL CHECK

Temperature, bloodwork for organ damage, IV fluids, active cooling, oxygen therapy, clotting tests, and hospitalization for monitoring. Heatstroke often damages kidneys, brain, and GI tract.

MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSES (BASED ON 40 YEARS OF CASES)

• Heatstroke
• Airway collapse
• Shock
• Organ injury
• Internal bleeding secondary to heat damage

BREEDS OR AGES AT HIGHER RISK

• Bulldogs, Pugs, Frenchies
• Labs, Goldens, Shepherds (exercise fans)
• Obese pets
• Seniors

WHEN YOU SHOULD SCHEDULE A VETERINARY VISIT

• Immediate (NOW): Any signs of overheating

EXPECTED RECOVERY TIME

• Mild-to-moderate heatstroke: 24–72 hours
• Severe cases: guarded prognosis; hospitalization required

HOW THIS SYMPTOM RELATES TO LONGEVITY

Heatstroke causes permanent organ damage. Surviving dogs often have reduced long-term kidney and liver function. Preventing recurrence is key to preserving longevity.

WHEN TO CONSIDER A LONGEVITY CONSULT

Highly recommended for obese dogs, brachycephalics, and seniors after heatstroke.

FOR CANCER-RELATED CONCERNS

None specific — but heatstroke can unmask hidden illness due to organ stress.

FAQ

Should I use ice water?

No — it constricts vessels and slows cooling.

Can a dog get heatstroke indoors?

Yes — especially seniors, obese dogs, and brachycephalics in warm houses.

If the dog looks better, can I skip the ER?

No — internal damage continues even after outward cooling.
