HUNCHED POSTURE (GI PAIN)

WHAT THIS SYMPTOM USUALLY MEANS

A hunched posture — back curved, abdomen tucked — often indicates abdominal pain. This can come from GI upset, pancreatitis, blockages, or other internal disease. It’s a classic “pain posture.”

MOST COMMON CAUSES

MILD OR SELF-LIMITING CAUSES

• Gas discomfort
• Mild stomach upset
• Minor constipation

MEDICAL CAUSES

• Pancreatitis
• GI inflammation
• Gastritis
• Foreign body
• Ulcers
• Liver or kidney pain

EMERGENCY CAUSES

• Obstruction
• GDV (dogs)
• Ruptured organ (very rare)
• Severe pancreatitis

RED FLAGS: WHEN THIS IS AN EMERGENCY

• Hunched posture + vomiting
• Hunched posture + no appetite
• Screaming/crying when picked up
• Swollen or hard abdomen
• Posture lasting >2–3 hours

AT-HOME CARE YOU CAN START NOW

• Encourage rest
• Prevent jumping or rough play
• Offer water
• Feed bland diet if not vomiting
Avoid giving pain meds unless prescribed — many human meds are toxic.

WHAT A VETERINARIAN WILL CHECK

• Abdominal palpation for pain
• X-rays (obstruction/bloat)
• Ultrasound (pancreas, intestines)
• Bloodwork (pancreas, liver, kidneys)
• Hydration status

MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSES

• Pancreatitis
• Gastritis
• Gas pain
• Obstruction
• IBD flare
• Liver or kidney pain

BREEDS OR AGES AT HIGHER RISK

• Middle-aged female dogs (pancreatitis)
• Senior pets (organ pain)
• Puppies/kittens (obstruction)

WHEN YOU SHOULD SCHEDULE A VETERINARY VISIT

• Same day for abdominal pain
• Immediately if vomiting + posture

EXPECTED RECOVERY TIME

• Mild pain: 12–24 hours
• Pancreatitis: days–weeks
• Obstruction: surgical emergency

HOW THIS SYMPTOM RELATES TO LONGEVITY

Abdominal pain is often an early sign of organ disease — kidney, liver, pancreas — all major longevity drivers.

WHEN TO CONSIDER A LONGEVITY CONSULT

• Recurrent GI pain
• Senior pets
• Chronic pancreatitis
• Weight loss
