IRREGULAR HEAT CYCLES (TOO FREQUENT OR TOO INFREQUENT)

WHAT THIS SYMPTOM USUALLY MEANS

Irregular heat cycles—coming into heat too often, too rarely, or unpredictably—are signs of ovarian dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, ovarian cysts, or systemic illness.

MOST COMMON CAUSES

MILD

• Young females with immature cycles
• Recent stress or illness

MEDICAL

• Ovarian cysts
• Ovarian remnant (if previously spayed)
• Ovarian tumors
• Thyroid disease
• Systemic illness affecting hormone regulation

EMERGENCY

• Pyometra associated with abnormal hormonal cycling
• Heavy or continuous bleeding

RED FLAGS

• Bleeding lasting >3 weeks
• Swollen abdomen
• Fever or lethargy
• Vulvar discharge with odor
• If unsure, treat as urgent.

AT-HOME CARE

• Track cycle dates
• Prevent access to males
These steps do not replace an exam.

WHAT A VETERINARIAN WILL CHECK

• Hormone levels
• Thyroid panel
• Abdominal ultrasound
• Vaginal cytology
• CBC/chemistry

MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSES

• Ovarian cyst
• Hormonal imbalance
• Ovarian tumor
• Anestrus from illness

BREEDS/AGES AT HIGHER RISK

• Young females (<2 years)
• Seniors still intact
• Dogs with prior reproductive disease

WHEN TO SEEK CARE

• Today: bleeding + lethargy
• Within 72 hrs: irregular heat patterns

EXPECTED RECOVERY TIME

• Hormone imbalance: 2–6 weeks
• Cyst removal: surgical recovery
• Ovarian tumor: varies

LONGEVITY IMPACT

Disrupted hormonal cycles increase risk of pyometra and mammary tumors.

LONGEVITY CONSULT

Ideal for intact females with cycle abnormalities.
