CHOCOLATE TOXICITY IN DOGS/CATS

WHAT THIS SYMPTOM USUALLY MEANS

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which pets cannot metabolize efficiently. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, agitation, tremors, or life-threatening heart arrhythmias—especially in dogs. Cats are also susceptible but less likely to ingest chocolate voluntarily.

MOST COMMON CAUSES

MILD OR SELF-LIMITING CAUSES (COMMON)

• Very small amounts of milk chocolate
• Minor stomach upset without stimulant effects

MEDICAL CAUSES THAT NEED DIAGNOSIS (MODERATE CONCERN)

• Ingestion of milk chocolate in moderate quantity
• Early stimulant signs (restlessness, vomiting, panting)

EMERGENCY CAUSES (HIGH CONCERN)

• Dark chocolate, baking chocolate, or cocoa powder ingestion
• Vomiting + tremors
• Very fast heart rate, arrhythmias
• Seizures
• Hyperthermia

RED FLAGS: WHEN THIS IS AN EMERGENCY

• Your pet ate any dark chocolate or cocoa powder
• Tremors, seizures, or collapse
• Rapid breathing or agitation
• Racing heart rate
• Large-breed or small-breed dogs with ANY ingestion (due to dose variability)

If you’re unsure, treat it as urgent.

AT-HOME CARE YOU CAN START NOW

• If ingestion was within 30 minutes, call your vet—induced vomiting may be recommended
• Remove access to the chocolate
• Bring wrapper/ingredient info with you
These steps do not replace a veterinary exam if symptoms continue or worsen.

WHAT A VETERINARIAN WILL CHECK

• Dose calculation based on weight and chocolate type
• Induce vomiting if appropriate
• Administer activated charcoal
• ECG to assess heart rhythm
• IV fluids and anti-arrhythmics if needed
• Temperature monitoring

MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSES (BASED ON 40 YEARS OF CASES)

• Chocolate toxicity (mild → severe)
• Stimulant-induced arrhythmias
• Pancreatitis (delayed)
• GI upset

BREEDS OR AGES AT HIGHER RISK

• Small dogs (higher dose-per-pound risk)
• Puppies
• Dogs with heart disease

WHEN YOU SHOULD SCHEDULE A VETERINARY VISIT

Immediately. Chocolate toxicity is never “wait and see.”

EXPECTED RECOVERY TIME

• Mild cases: 12–24 hours
• Severe toxicity: 24–72 hours
• Complications (pancreatitis): days to weeks

HOW THIS SYMPTOM RELATES TO LONGEVITY

Severe toxicity can cause permanent heart damage. Repeated dietary indiscretions increase inflammation and pancreatitis risk—both longevity limiting.

WHEN TO CONSIDER A LONGEVITY CONSULT

If chocolate toxicity indicates your pet frequently accesses unsafe foods or shows signs of chronic inflammation, a longevity consult helps create safer protocols at home.

FOR CANCER-RELATED CONCERNS

Not typically cancer-related.

FAQ

How much chocolate is dangerous?

Any dark chocolate. Milk chocolate depends on dose and size.

Should I induce vomiting at home?

Only after speaking with a veterinarian.

What if my cat eats chocolate?

Cats are highly sensitive, even though ingestion is less common.
