SHOCK / SEVERE HYPOTENSION IN DOGS/CATS
WHAT THIS SYMPTOM USUALLY MEANS
Shock occurs when the body cannot maintain blood pressure or perfuse vital organs. It is immediately life-threatening. Causes include trauma, internal bleeding, infection, heatstroke, heart failure, anaphylaxis, and severe dehydration.
MOST COMMON CAUSES
MILD OR SELF-LIMITING CAUSES (COMMON)
There are no mild causes of shock.
MEDICAL CAUSES THAT NEED DIAGNOSIS (MODERATE CONCERN)
(Still require emergency care.)
• Severe dehydration
• Heat exhaustion
• Severe GI disease (vomiting/diarrhea)
• Cardiac arrhythmias
EMERGENCY CAUSES (HIGH CONCERN)
• Internal bleeding (splenic/liver rupture, HSA)
• Major trauma
• Septic shock (infection causing organ collapse)
• Anaphylaxis
• GDV (bloat)
• Heart failure or cardiac arrest
• Toxin ingestion
• Pancreatitis crisis
RED FLAGS: WHEN THIS IS AN EMERGENCY
• Pale, white, or blue gums
• Very fast or very weak pulse
• Cold limbs
• Collapse
• Vomiting + lethargy
• Distended abdomen
• Rapid breathing
If you’re unsure, treat it as urgent.
AT-HOME CARE YOU CAN START NOW
• Transport immediately
• Keep pet warm with blankets
• Keep head level with body
• Do NOT give food or water
• Minimize movement
These steps do not replace a veterinary exam if symptoms continue or worsen.
WHAT A VETERINARIAN WILL CHECK
IV fluids, oxygen, bloodwork, ECG, blood pressure, ultrasound or X-rays for internal bleeding, clotting tests, antibiotics if septic, pain control, and stabilization.
MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSES (BASED ON 40 YEARS OF CASES)
• Internal bleeding (often splenic tumors)
• Severe dehydration
• Sepsis
• Trauma
• Heart failure
• Pancreatitis
• Anaphylaxis
BREEDS OR AGES AT HIGHER RISK
• Senior large dogs (splenic tumors)
• Brachycephalics (low oxygen reserve)
• Pets with chronic organ disease
WHEN YOU SHOULD SCHEDULE A VETERINARY VISIT
• Immediate (NOW): Any signs of shock
EXPECTED RECOVERY TIME
• Depends on cause — ranges from hours to days
• Internal bleeding: surgery often required
HOW THIS SYMPTOM RELATES TO LONGEVITY
Shock often unmasks life-threatening disease. Early intervention can add months to years by stabilizing and treating the underlying cause.
WHEN TO CONSIDER A LONGEVITY CONSULT
After stabilization, essential for pets with chronic illness, cardiac disease, or cancer concerns.
FOR CANCER-RELATED CONCERNS
Internal bleeding is commonly caused by hemangiosarcoma. Use Pet Cancer Navigator for next-step guidance.
FAQ
Can shock improve on its own?
No — fatal without treatment.
Why do gums turn white?
Blood pressure crashes, reducing perfusion.
Can shock happen without trauma?
Yes — infections, bleeding tumors, and heart disease are common causes.
