SUDDEN PARALYSIS (ACUTE LIMB COLLAPSE) IN DOGS/CATS

WHAT THIS SYMPTOM USUALLY MEANS

Sudden paralysis — inability to move one or more limbs — signals a severe neurologic, vascular, or spinal emergency. In cats, saddle thrombus (blood clot) is a leading cause. In dogs, spinal disc rupture is common.

MOST COMMON CAUSES

MILD OR SELF-LIMITING CAUSES (COMMON)

There are no mild causes of sudden paralysis.

MEDICAL CAUSES THAT NEED DIAGNOSIS (MODERATE CONCERN)

• Mild spinal compression
• Hypoglycemia
• Tick paralysis (region-dependent)

EMERGENCY CAUSES (HIGH CONCERN)

• Saddle thrombus (cats — extremely painful, sudden hind-leg paralysis)
• IVDD spinal disc rupture (dogs)
• Stroke
• Traumatic spinal injury
• Blood clots
• Severe nerve damage
• Fractures
• Toxins affecting neuromuscular function

RED FLAGS: WHEN THIS IS AN EMERGENCY

• Sudden inability to walk
• Dragging hind legs
• Cold rear feet (cats with saddle thrombus)
• Extreme pain
• Loss of bladder/bowel control
• Collapse + crying out

If you’re unsure, treat it as urgent.

AT-HOME CARE YOU CAN START NOW

• Prevent any movement
• Lift and carry pet carefully
• Support spine in straight line
• Do NOT allow walking attempts
• Transport immediately
These steps do not replace a veterinary exam if symptoms continue or worsen.

WHAT A VETERINARIAN WILL CHECK

Neurologic exam, X-rays, ultrasound (for clots), blood pressure, ECG, bloodwork, pain control, anti-clot therapy (cats), or emergency spinal surgery for severe disc disease.

MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSES (BASED ON 40 YEARS OF CASES)

• Saddle thrombus (cats)
• IVDD (dogs)
• Spinal trauma
• Vascular events
• Stroke
• Neuromuscular toxin exposure

BREEDS OR AGES AT HIGHER RISK

• Cats with heart disease (saddle thrombus)
• Dachshunds, Corgis, Frenchies (IVDD)
• Senior pets (vascular events)

WHEN YOU SHOULD SCHEDULE A VETERINARY VISIT

• Immediate (NOW): Any sudden paralysis

EXPECTED RECOVERY TIME

• Depends on cause:
– Saddle thrombus: guarded prognosis
– IVDD: days–weeks, surgery often required
– Trauma: variable
– Stroke: sometimes improves

HOW THIS SYMPTOM RELATES TO LONGEVITY

Sudden paralysis often reveals major underlying disease (heart, spinal, vascular). Early stabilization improves both survival and life quality

WHEN TO CONSIDER A LONGEVITY CONSULT

Recommended for long-term management after any neurologic event.

FAQ

Can sudden paralysis get better on its own?

Rarely — most cases need urgent treatment.

Is saddle thrombus painful?

Extremely — and always an emergency.

Should I massage or move the limbs?

No — could worsen damage.
