EARLY ONSET HEAT (PUBERTY TOO SOON)

WHAT THIS SYMPTOM USUALLY MEANS

Heat cycles before 5 months in dogs or 4 months in cats may reflect early hormonal activation, sometimes driven by breed, body weight, or environmental estrogen exposure.

MOST COMMON CAUSES

MILD

• Breed variation (small breeds cycle early)
• Early maturity in cats

MEDICAL

• Environmental hormone exposure (estrogen creams, plastics)
• Early ovarian cysts
• Genetic predisposition

EMERGENCY

Not typically—but accidental pregnancy risk increases.

RED FLAGS

• Strong estrogen signs extremely early
• Behavioral agitation
• Swollen vulva in very young pets
• If unsure, treat as urgent.

AT-HOME CARE

• Prevent breeding
• Keep males separated

WHAT A VETERINARIAN WILL CHECK

• Hormone panel
• Exposure history
• Physical exam
• Ultrasound if warranted

MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSES

• Normal early puberty
• Hormonal exposure
• Ovarian disease (rare)

WHEN TO SCHEDULE

• Within 1 week: early heat signs
• Today: bleeding + lethargy

LONGEVITY IMPACT

Early heat increases long-term mammary cancer risk if not spayed early.

LONGEVITY CONSULT

Appropriate for early spay timing and reproductive risk planning.
