CHRONIC DIARRHEA

WHAT THIS SYMPTOM USUALLY MEANS

Chronic diarrhea (lasting >2 weeks) almost always indicates an underlying medical condition — inflammatory bowel disease, parasites, malabsorption, pancreatic insufficiency, food allergies, or systemic illness.

This is never normal.

MOST COMMON CAUSES

MILD CAUSES

• None — chronic diarrhea is a medical issue

MEDICAL CAUSES THAT NEED DIAGNOSIS

• IBD (inflammatory bowel disease)
• Food intolerance/allergy
• Parasites (giardia, whipworms)
• Pancreatic insufficiency (EPI)
• Dysbiosis
• Hyperthyroidism (cats)
• Kidney/liver disease

EMERGENCY CAUSES

• Chronic diarrhea + weight loss
• Chronic diarrhea + vomiting
• Severe dehydration
• Black/tarry stool
• Cancer (GI lymphoma)

RED FLAGS: WHEN THIS IS AN EMERGENCY

• Rapid weight loss
• Blood or black stool
• Vomiting + chronic diarrhea
• Extreme lethargy
• Pale gums

AT-HOME CARE YOU CAN START NOW

• Switch to bland diet temporarily
• Start a high-quality probiotic
• Add fiber if approved by vet
• Ensure hydration

Long-term home treatment without diagnosis is not appropriate.

WHAT A VETERINARIAN WILL CHECK

• Fecal exam + PCR panel
• Bloodwork (organ function)
• Thyroid testing (cats)
• Pancreatic enzyme tests (cTLI)
• Ultrasound
• Food allergy trial
• Biopsy if needed

MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSES

• IBD
• Food allergy
• Parasites
• EPI
• Endocrine disease
• GI lymphoma

BREEDS OR AGES AT HIGHER RISK

• German Shepherds (EPI, IBD)
• Boxers (colitis)
• Senior cats (hyperthyroidism, lymphoma)

WHEN YOU SHOULD SCHEDULE A VETERINARY VISIT

• Within 1–3 days
• Same day if weight loss or vomiting

EXPECTED RECOVERY TIME

• Depends on cause: days–months
• IBD/EPI: chronic management

HOW THIS SYMPTOM RELATES TO LONGEVITY

Chronic diarrhea accelerates inflammation, malabsorption, and organ stress — all major longevity reducers.

WHEN TO CONSIDER A LONGEVITY CONSULT

• Chronic GI disease
• Weight loss
• Senior pets
